Yum: Strawberry and Banana Smoothie

No, Drew doesn’t do all of the “cooking.” I make things. Like salads. I used to make chocolate chip pancakes and they were delicious, but I think I’ve only done that once or twice since Nathaniel was born. Note to self: Make chocolate chip pancakes and let Nathaniel help. Fun!

I can also make smoothies. I’ve been on an oatmeal kick for a while, so my former breakfast starter has been relegated to the bench. Ha! Am I freaking you out right now? Not only can I “cook” things, I can even make a SPORTS reference…at least once every 10 years. Last weekend the sun was out and it felt a little warmer, so I wanted to tell that smoothie to suit up, or come back in the game, or whatever. Okay, done with sports references.

One of my favorite smoothies is strawberry and banana. I don’t have an exact recipe, but I have an ingredients list and some guidelines. You can always taste it and add more or less fruit or agave.

Inward Facing Girl’s Strawberry and Banana Smoothie

A handful of fresh or frozen strawberries

1 banana

1 cup of soymilk*

1-2 tablespoons of nonfat or lowfat yogurt

1 serving of soy protein powder

1 teaspoon of agave**

A couple of ice cubes

Combine all of these things into a blender and press the button. See? Easy peasy.

* I had to make my most recent batch with skim milk because I was out of soymilk. I swear that’s why my smoothie wasn’t thick enough.

** I like my smoothies on the sweet side, so be sure to taste yours before settling on an amount.

You can also substitute blueberries for strawberries or add blueberries to this version for a different flavor. Sometimes I even add some frozen spinach to the mix. I swear you can’t even tell it’s there, and it’s good for you. Ask Popeye.

Peanut butter and banana or medjool dates and banana are other tasty options. I like to keep the dates and some sliced bananas in the freezer. Then you can pop them into the blender and add less ice to your recipe. Sometimes I make a couple of extra servings and store it in the refrigerator for a quick shake-and-go breakfast.

Enjoy! xo
