Creative Process: Nina Donis Via Thisispaper

Thisispaper Magazine

Thisispaper Magazine is a gorgeous print publication from a Warsaw, Poland based multidisciplinary design studio founded by Alexander Zakharov and Zuzanna Gasior. I’ve been following their online journal for a while now, so when I found out they were publishing a print issue I was super psyched.

One of my favorite stories in the inaugural print issue was the interview with Russian fashion designer Nina Donis.

“The hardest part of the design process is the conceptual part. From all the ideas that we have in mind we must choose one that the collection will rest upon. We have to get rid of all the other ideas, so there is clarity and purity in what we want to express. There may be a few minor ideas but they shouldn’t overwhelm the main one. At some point we stop and rethink the collection to “clean” the unnecessary details. This part is hard as well. What we always have in mind while designing is that the clothes should be wearable and comfortable.”

I experience this same issue when I’m creating a physical collage. Creating the piece is so often about taking items away from the composition. What I delete molds the mood and outcome of the final artwork.
