Illustration Concept: Donna Karan Chaos Perfume

Donna Karan Chaos Perfume Concept Artwork | Commercial Illustration by Melanie Biehle

The more I create paintings, the more I start to think about using them commercially. To be honest, I’m about 95% certain that I want to devote most of my time pursuing commercial illustration versus fine art, and not just because of the money and opportunities.

I’ve loved advertising ever since I was a teenager. I used to plaster my bedroom wall (and ceiling!) with colorful shopping bags with logos, Esprit catalogues, and Guess print ads from magazines. I love graphic design, especially for magazines and fashion advertising.

To start doing more work like this, I have to show more of my work in this light. That’s what I’m doing today. I chose one of my all-time favorite perfumes, Chaos by Donna Karan, and paired the (discontinued) product with a line drawing that I created in pen. Supposedly, Karan’s late husband Stephan Weiss created the perfume itself and designed the beautiful bottle that it was originally packaged in. Chaos launched in 1996 and was discontinued in 2002, after Weiss’s death. It was rerelased briefly, in different packaging.

Commercial art makes sense for me. It seamlessly blends abstract paintings, drawings, or collages with graphic design. Two of my loves in one perfect package.

I’d love to create something beautiful for you and your customers.
