Creating a Composite Pattern From a Sketchbook Painting

Pink, Black, White Composite Pattern Design by Melanie Biehle

One of the best things about combining physical tools like gouache and watercolor sketchbooks with digital tools like Adobe Photoshop is the ability to merge different parts of paintings or patterns that you like into one image, or creating a composite image like the pattern I designed above.

The photo on the left is the original sketchbook page where I was just playing with different painting styles, color palettes, and potential pattern elements. I have no idea what the purplish-pink-mauve blob was supposed to be initially, but thanks to being able to also work digitally I never have to see it rear its ugly head again.

Making the composite pattern was almost as much fun as the initial painting process. I love being able to take things that I make in the physical world and manipulate them into different possibilities. Plus, I can go back to my layered design in Photoshop and create a collection of complementary patterns that all fit together.

I definitely feel a new collection coming on inspired by this one.

Have a great weekend! xoxo
