Mood Board: Nomads

“I don’t move from place to place on purpose. It’s not a conscious choice to be a nomad. Although I can see that each move is my own decision, predicated on nothing but my ever-growing sense that I don’t belong where I am, fueled by the hope that maybe there is, in fact, a place that I do belong, a place just off in the future.”

Maybe in Another Life, Taylor Jenkins Reid

I’m really excited about Nomads, the new abstract painting series that I’ve started working on now and will release this spring. I’ve been thinking about this theme for a while, and lived it for longer.  While I’m not really focusing on the “lost and finding yourself” aspect of wandering in this series, it can’t help but show up occasionally given my own experiences. When I was traveling with my family this summer and staying in a lot of different homes and rooms, I started thinking more about the nomadic lifestyle that many creative people strive for these days. While I’m more physically and emotionally settled than I was 10+ years ago, I still dream about packing up my family for an Australian hiatus and getting rid of most of the physical things that tether us to living in a specific place.

“Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.”

– André Gide

There is a romantic element to giving in to wanderlust for sure, as well as an expansion of ideas and spirit. I’m excited to spend the next month or two diving in to this theme more and seeing the work that comes out of it. I’m not planning on sharing the finished pieces until they are all done, but every now and then you can catch a glimpse on Instagram. I’ll be sharing more mood boards here too!
