You’re My Obsession: October 24-30, 2011

October 2011Look Both Ways by Debbie Millman

So, I’m reading more. I’m really making an effort to live by my minimum 15 minute per day book reading goal on my Mighty Life List. Is it really so hard to read a book for 15 minutes a day, you ask? Yes, yes it is.

Right now I’m reading and loving Look Both Ways by Debbie Millman. I’m just over halfway through the book, but the first several essays made me think about something. Did all of us creative/artsy/literary types love getting the Weekly Reader and ordering books from Scholastic when we were kids? Did we all get super excited when it was time to go shopping for school supplies, and do we still love buying pens, paper, art supplies, etc.? The answer must be yes.

Last night I read the Pick One essay, where Debbie talks about a job interview that she had right after graduation. In the interview she was asked what kind of design she wanted to do and told that she had to pick one type. Later, Debbie describes the job she ended up with (at another company) where she was able to learn about and work in different types of design. I love the last two sentences of the essay.

There is always something new to dream of and always different dreams to choose. And you don’t have to pick just one.

You can read Cool Hunting’s take on Look Both Ways here, and if you want more of Debbie and design, check out her interview series podcast, Design Matters. I’m so excited to start listening to these!

It’s Lonely in the Modern World

I’m sure most of you have seen the Unhappy Hipsters website by now, but did you know that my beloved Chronicle Books has published a book based on the popular blog?

Roy hated the pineapple upside down pancakes and finally said so over IM later that morning.
It’s Lonely in the Modern World not only includes the gorgeous photographs with hilarious captions that we’ve all come to love, but is a true “resource” for modernist living. It will help you answer the hard questions, like what shade of gray the concrete floors in your nursery should be, or where your son should sit so he doesn’t clash with the vintage Eames chairs.

Max Wanger

When you’re on the interwebs as much as I am, sometimes you forget where you first saw something. Like photography by Max Wanger

After doing a little more digging, I found out that Max did the engagement photos for a blogger that I like, Joanna Goddard at A Cup of Jo.

Isn’t he fantastic?

Sapling Press

Have you guys seen these hilariously cool cards by Sapling Press? I love them.

Camilla Engman

This week I finished reading/admiring all of the illustrations and photographs in the Camilla Engman book from UPPERCASE.

I love her work. Camilla’s color palette is beautiful and her collages are inspiring. I feel like I read/studied this book at the perfect time. I’m working on a series of collages now, and it’s helped me figure out different ways I’d like to cut papers for them.

For more Camilla, check out her blog and her Flickr site.

P.S. I love her workspace and her cute dog Morran. The book also includes a short book about her sweet pup.
