Top Tips for Alt Summit: When You Get Home

So…how’s it going, Alt Summit people? How are you feeling? Do you miss your new BFFs? Are you happy to be home?

Do you have post-Alt depression? Fear not. Last year when I got home I had to jump from the creative world of Alt right back into pediatric behavioral healthcare research. Boom. It was quite a leap, and it was extremely difficult. I had finally found the place where my interests, talent, and temperament completely fit. Everything I had learned about marketing, writing, photograpy, and design all worked in the blogging and social media world. Now I just had to figure out how that could take all of the things I loved and create a brand new career for myself.

Here’s what you can start doing today.

Let it sink in.

If you’re anything like me when I got home from my first year at Alt Summit, you’re going to need to chill out. I know you’re excited. I know you want to do…it…ALL…RIGHT…NOW. I know I did! And even after year two I feel impatient about all of the changes I want to make. But I’m not going to email every connection that I made today, delete all my pins, Facebook friends, Feedly, and Twitter feed and start from scratch, or write the ebook I’m planning. Today I’m going to think, plan, and strategize. And email some people. Just not everyone. :)

Share your knowledge.

We all learned some fantastic things at Alt. Why not share them with your readers so they can benefit from your attendance too? Be sure to include proper credits for the information you provide. Reference and link back to the bloggers and presentations that gave you all of your cool tips. If you use other people’s photographs, be sure to credit them!

Follow up.

Did you meet your dream sponsor at Alt? Did you have an especially wonderful conversation with your favorite blogger? Do you have a whole group of new friends that you’d like to collaborate with? Don’t forget to follow up! Thank you, nice to meet you, and I would like to work on _____ with you emails go a long way in building relationships. If there are people that you really connected with, don’t forget to get in touch.

Oh…speaking of making changes…

I have a new Instagram account!

Be sure to follow me. After all the TOS madness, I wasn’t sure how or if I would use it again, so I decided to start from scratch. I want to create a brand new Instagram feed that is very intentional. I’m not going to constantly upload photos there like I did in the past. I’m going to keep using Flickr as well, and I’m probably never going to take a photo with the Instagram camera itself. I’ve enjoyed having higher resolution photos since I stopped using the app in December.

Okay. I think you’ve heard enough from me today. Let’s chat again tomorrow. Or on Twitter.
