That Time I Tried Barre3

I hate to exercise. I get bored by it. I don’t like taking away time from my creative work and giving it to working out. I don’t like going places for the purpose of exercising. Olivia Newton-John in “Let’s Get Physical” was never my role model. Funhouse Sandy in Grease or Xanadu muse, yes. But please don’t make me go to the gym.

But here’s the thing. Once I actually get to the class, I usually like it.

I’ve had an off-and-on love affair with yoga since fifth grade. I’ve never taken a ballet class, but have always been fascinated by it. When I was eight I used to squeeze myself into my cousin’s pink tutu and twirl around their house every time we visited them. As an adult, I’ve sporadically taken yoga classes and bookmarked NYC ballet workouts to try. I don’t know what it is, but there’s something about these two disciplines that speak to me.

When I started hearing people talk and tweet about barre3 I started to get curious. The mix of ballet barre, yoga, and pilates seemed to be something I would like. I NEED to do some kind of exercise, even though I’d rather be Instagramming, so I thought, why not? I contacted Sadie Lincoln and asked her if I could try out a few classes and let you guys know what I thought.

After cancelling my class reservations twice, I took my first class on Monday. You guys, I seriously felt awesome for the rest of the day. I was on an adrenaline high or something. Maybe my body was in shock because it actually moved further than the distance from my desk to the couch. I don’t know. Whatever it is, I want more.

My barre3 fanatic friends were like, “You’re going to be so sore tomorrow!” I can barely believe it, but I wasn’t. I’m going back for my second class this afternoon and am planning to squeeze in one more on Friday. I’m really feeling motivated, you guys. After my first class, I even stocked up on healthy food from the Whole Foods next door. That night I didn’t eat ice cream. Well…except for one bite of Drew’s ice cream. I ate a BANANA instead. I’m telling you, I really might stick to it.

Have you guys tried barre3? What do you think? What kind of results have you seen long-term? Am I going to be able to fit into my pre-pregnancy clothes eventually? Please say yes. I saved a few pair of jeans just in case.

P.S. If you’re thinking about trying it out, you should purchase a class card by the 29th. They’re having a sale right now!
