New Original Abstract Painting: Excavation

A couple of weeks ago I shared how beach rocks from Edgewater Beach in Mukilteo, collected images of marble and granite, and my photographs of Pacific Northwest driftwood were informing a large 40×60 inch painting that I was creating in my Seattle art studio. Today I would like to share the finished work with you, titled Excavation.

Built through layers of acrylic paint and texture mediums, Excavation brings together weathered surfaces and earthy mineral tones. The composition feels organic, suggesting eroded stone and shifting terrain that is gradually revealed over time.

I love that this painting ended up being one that could truly be displayed horizontally or vertically. I feel like that’s really uncommon for my artwork.

It’s also funny that when I first began working on the piece and it started inching its way towards completion that it was neither of these orientations! It’s interesting when that happens during the process. The painting truly shows you what it wants to be.

I’ve included a couple of digitally staged images below so you can get an idea of the size of the painting and how it could look in different environments.

This large abstract painting carries on my work in the Patina series. Excavation and the rest of the Patina collection are available exclusively through Seattle Art Source.

The first three paintings in the Patina series, digitally styled for scale. Available at Seattle Art Source.
